Dr Minella Alarcon, Commissioner at the Philippines’ Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and Mr Karol Mark Yee, CHED Program Director, together with Dr. Lucio Sia, Executive Director of the UNESCO South East Asia Centre of Lifelong Learning for Sustainable Development, visited IIEP-UNESCO on 5 September 2016 to discuss potential areas of collaboration as the Philippines embark on the K to 12 transition program.
K to 12 is a commonly used diminutive to refer to publicly-supported school grades from Kindergarden to Grade 12 of Senior High School. Up until now, the Philippines remained one of the few countries to have a 10-year basic education cycle. This profound reform implies important changes for higher education in the Philippines, as subjects previously taught in colleges will now be available at Senior Secondary Schools. The process requires careful planning and capacity-building to support higher education institutions and their faculty and staff during the 5 year transition period.
IIEP’s expertise in higher education reforms, internal and external quality assurance and teacher careers, as well as the Institute’s broad training offer in educational planning and management, provide perspectives for the institute to assist with the implementation of the K to 12 transition program.
