Sub-Regional Online Meeting on the Promotion of Cultural and Creative Industries and the 2005 Convention for the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions

UNESCO Cluster Office in Almaty organises a Sub-Regional Online Meeting on the Promotion of Cultural and Creative Industries and the 2005 Convention for the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions for representatives of authorised agencies for the development of cultural and creative industries, associations of artists, non-governmental organisations and individual creative entrepreneurs.

Background

The year 2020 has demonstrated the great vulnerability of all cultural and creative industries around the world to the COVID-19 pandemic and crisis that accompanies it. Since the beginning of the pandemic, UNESCO is constantly working on the collection of good practices and innovative responses, as well as the practical actions to consider for implementation in the interest of developing comprehensive reactive measures to this crisis. One of the new publications "Culture in crisis: Policy guide for a resilient creative sector" (https://en.unesco.org/creativity/news/culture-crisis-new-unesco-publication-offers-tips), provides guidance to policymakers on how to effectively address culture in COVID-19 recovery plans and rebuild the creative industry stronger. It identifies three types of interventions: 1) Direct support for artists and cultural professionals, 2) Support for sectors of the cultural and creative industries, and 3) Enhancing the competitiveness of cultural and creative industries.

In this difficult period, the support of culture and creativity has to be based on the constant dialogue between authorised state agencies and representatives of cultural and creative professions and the organisation to jointly develop and further promote effective and sustainable management mechanisms in these sectors.

One of the fundamental principles of this dialogue is the recognition of all forms of diversity of cultural expressions. This approach helps, among other things, to provide diverse assistance to the greatest number of cultural and creative workers in times of emergency, similar to the world today. It also contributes to the development of a strong cultural and creative economy, which can be a driving force for economic recovery after the end or significant decrease in the COVID-19 pandemic.

2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions has the key importance for the practical implementation of the abovementioned approach.

Description

In order to raise awareness of the interested parties representing the states of Central Asia and Southern Caucasus on benefits of the 2005 Convention for the support and development of cultural and creative industries for sustainable development, UNESCO Cluster Office in Almaty organises a Sub-Regional Online Meeting on the Promotion of Cultural and Creative Industries and the 2005 Convention for the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions.

The meeting will take place on Tuesday, 26 January 2021 from 11:00 to 13:00 Almaty time in the framework of the "Strengthening of the Film Industry in Central Asia" project supported by the Government of the Republic of Korea.

The event will be useful for representatives of authorised agencies for the development of cultural and creative industries, associations of artists, non-governmental organisations and individual creative entrepreneurs.

The event is of equal relevance to countries that have already ratified the 2005 Convention and for countries that have not yet done so.
