Gender Views: Promising New Directions for Ending anti-LGBT Bias and Violence in Schools

15/03/2019

On 15 March, UNESCO held a Gender Views session on Promising new directions for ending anti-LGBT bias and violence in schools with Dr Eliza Byard.

Mr Damiano Giampaoli, Programme Specialist at the Division for Gender Equality, introduced Dr Byard, who is Executive Director of GLSEN – a leading American education organization focused on ensuring safe and affirming schools for LGBTQ students.

During her tenure, GLSEN’s work has spurred a significant decline in anti-LGBT harassment and violence in schools; established a new professional norm of support for LGBTQ youth among educators, school administrators, and school staff in the United States; and sparked an international movement for LGBTQ-inclusive primary and secondary education. GLSEN currently partners with 30 NGOs in three global regions to develop the evidence base for advocacy and program development to improve LGBTQ students’ lives in their respective countries.

Programme Specialist from the Health and Education section, Mr Christopher Castle was also present at the Gender Views and gave an overview of UNESCO work on this area, he stated that UNESCO promotes equality and respect for all from a Gender Equality perspective. GENDER VIEWS
