Director-General condemns killing of Mexican journalist, Juan Carlos Muñiz

The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, has denounced the killing of the Mexican journalist, Juan Carlos Muñiz, on 4 March. The journalist was murdered in Fresnillo, Zacatecas. He was shot while driving a cab, a job he alternated with his media work.

I condemn the killing of Juan Carlos Muñiz, another brave Mexican journalist who paid the ultimate price by simply exercising his profession. I call upon the authorities to conduct a full investigation and to act immediately to protect journalists.
Audrey Azoulay Director-General of UNESCO

Juan Carlos worked for the news portal Testigo Minero, where he covered policing and organized crime, under the pseudonym “Rigoberto” or “TX”.  He also reported for other media outlets in the city.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
