Co-organized by UNESCO and the Arab Regional Centre for World Heritage (ARCWH), the International Conference on World Heritage Sites and Museums will take place in UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, from 2 to 3 November 2016, in cooperation also with ALECSO, ICCROM, ICOM, ICOMOS, and IUCN.

The World Heritage Convention, with its 192 States Parties and 1052 cultural, natural and mixed sites, holds that World Heritage sites belong to the international community as a whole, and are ours to share, to protect and to respect.  Many World Heritage sites have related “site museums” or cultural institutions with rich collections that serve to present and preserve the integrity of the sites through conservation, public awareness and education. Some museums were also inscribed as World Heritage.

In view of the Recommendation concerning the Protection and Promotion of Museums and Collections, their Diversity and their Role in Society recently adopted by UNESCO , and the importance of museums to society at large as multipliers of social, educational and economic benefits, this international conference will focus on the links between World Heritage sites and museums. In particular, the conference will address issues such as the role of site museums as a mediator, a conveyor of Outstanding Universal Values of World Heritage, a custodian of the integrity of World Heritage, and their importance within the local community. Also to be discussed are World Heritage sites and museums under threat.
