Despite the enthusiasm of different stakeholders involved in Environmental Education in Serbia, Sonja Badjura realised that they weren’t always very good at sharing and communicating. Teachers lacked training. Staff working in Protected Areas didn’t always have the experience or skills to implement educational programmes.

As WWF Education Manager in Belgrade, Sonja Badjura developed the Nature Academy to implement biodiversity learning that brings together teams working in Protected Areas and local schools. The programme reinforces the skills of staff and teachers, while giving students the opportunity to take part in conservation efforts.

Hands-on sustainable development education

Each year, schools implement environmental projects in partnership with a nearby Protected Area and become their ambassador. Teachers and students learn through experimentation; staff are trained to develop and deliver educational programmes. Thus, setting a virtuous cycle in motion. Schools are encouraged to communicate about their project via social and local media, as well as mentor other schools.
