In Costa Rica, two high school students, Fabricio Madrigal and Andrea Sanclaudio, launched an initiative to help young people play an active, hands-on role in sustainable development.
Theory is good, but not enough. When Fabricio Madrigal and Andrea Sanclaudio realised that most students didn’t put what they learned about climate change into practice, they decided to act. These high school students wanted young people to see that their contributions make a difference and bring about change.
A growing student movement
The duo set up the Sustainable High School initiative in 2019 at Saint Anthony High School with the aim of encouraging young people to become leaders and commit to 2030 sustainable development objectives. With support from the Ministry of Education, NGOs, and local governments, the student council executed the 2030 Agenda as a political agenda and aligned school policies.
Since then, this dynamic project has grown into a student movement that supports the SDG through environmental campaigns, social and economic initiatives for local populations and help for school students during the Covid crisis in Costa Rica, and further afield.
