Tunisia is one of the countries most affected by climate change, especially desertification and water scarcity. These ecological challenges are closely linked to the socio-economic difficulties experienced by rural populations and are critical for all Tunisians as they increase inequalities.

A programme that protects, empowers and teaches

Launched by Franco-Tunisian activist Sarah Toumi in 2016 and supported by NGO Dream in Tunisia, Trees4Tunisia helps women and young people in rural areas generate revenues from the forests planted, while also restoring biodiversity and soils. The Young Forest Keeper program provides learning opportunities to actively involve participants in the project.

In September 2020, Trees4Tunisia had planted around 700,000 trees, empowered 250 women farmers, and trained more than 1000 students in schools across Tunisia, leading to the creation of 3 women’s cooperatives and several Young Forest Keeper groups.

Over the next few years, Trees4Tunisia is planning to expand the project across the North Africa Green Belt from Morocco to Egypt, working with sponsors to support the cost of looking after the trees during the first 24 months.
