In the Senegalese Sahelian territories, desertification and climate change are accentuated by human activities leading to lack of water, economic difficulties, food poverty and geographical isolation. In this challenging context, a group of determined women led by Coumba Dady KA, and supported by the Senegalese Agency for Reforestation and the Great Green Wall, decided to set up and manage a series of polyvalent gardens. Forming various Economic Interest Groups, these women cultivate fruit and vegetables throughout the year to increase food security for villages across the Great Green Wall.

Multi-purpose gardens, multiple benefits

These gardens not only provide enough food for villagers, but also enable them to diversify their diet and sell surplus crops at weekly markets. The women achieve greater social and financial autonomy, as well as being able to develop their agricultural expertise.

Despite the challenges of ensuring a constant water supply, 9 gardens have been created in Senegal. Over the coming years, the main goal is to ensure the gardens are sustainable and consolidate the position of the women involved in the project.
