With support from UNESCO’s World Heritage Marine Programme, the Banc d’Arguin National Park in Mauritania organized a series of educational activities for students from four local schools who are located in the park.

Throughout 2014, about 100 students participated in three-day excursions in which they learned about the biodiversity, the socioeconomic importance of the Park and the need to conserve its exceptional values so they will be able to share this heritage with their children and grandchildren. Local communities are dependent on the resources from the park for their livelihoods and education of the young generation is crucial for its future protection.

This initiative was made possible thanks to an anonymous donation following the Tides of Time article about the site in the International New York Times in 2010.
