Hyderabad fights against hunger in times of the pandemic

10/07/2020

The city of Hyderabad is the second largest metropolitan region in India with over 9 million inhabitants. In 2019, the city was designated as a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy.

Dealing with the COVID-19 crisis, the city has shown great social consciousness reflecting India’s charitable heritage. By providing free healthy meals, the city places its rich historical food culture at the service of its disadvantaged populations impacted by the pandemic.

Titled ‘Annapurna Canteen’, the initiative continues to fight against hunger and shields thousands of people from the socioeconomic impacts of the pandemic. Many inhabitants are supporting the initiative by donating food and other materials.

Furthermore, to better assist people in need, several shelters have also been opened by the government in collaboration with civil society organizations to house a large number of Indian labor migrants coming from various parts of the country and currently stranded in Hyderabad due to the existing lockdown measures.
