UNESCO's field based interventions acknowledge that a proper understanding of the wide ranging local contexts is necessary to plan the effective pro-poor use of both new and old technologies.
Local radio stations with a vested interest in the community are important providers of information and communication because of their accessibility, outreach, and ability to facilitate the engagement of citizens in local debates.
An increasing number of local radio stations can benefit from technological advancements that offer new opportunities for enabling citizens’ voice, facilitate informal education, extend social media networks and strengthen access to public information.

UNESCO gives voices to minorities in Mongolia
Launching a second channel of the Mongolian public broadcaster targeting minorities, enhancing the capacity of printing facilities for publications in minority languages, and supporting the establishment of ten community radio stations in remote areas are some of the major achievements related to Communication and Information that have been presented during a Experience-sharing Workshop recently held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
Giving a voice to women: New radio station is force for change in empowering women
A group of women in Jumla waited patiently and celebrated heartily the day when the antenna finally arrived and Radio Nari Aawaaj, which means Voice of Women, could start its transmissions as the first women’s community radio station in Jumla, Nepal.

UNESCO supported the organization of training on associative radio in Tunisia
UNESCO, through its Rabat Office, supported the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters in the organization of training on associative radio in Tunisia. The main training session took place from 12 to 14 March 2012 in Gafsa (Tunisia) and was followed, from 15 to 18 March 2012, by a series of training-mentoring workshops for "Sawt el Manajem" radio staff (Radio Voices of the Mines, la Voix des Mines).
