Media in Crisis and Disaster Situations

During times of crisis, conflict and natural disaster, the media are critical in contributing objectively to the discussion over how to respond, and ensuring local communities have access to life-saving information.

From violent extremism and the ongoing global refugee crisis, to diseases such as Ebola and Zika, the challenges we all face have tested the ability of media to respond effectively and responsibly. They have an imperative to avoid sensationalism and social division while delivering crucial information to affected communities.

UNESCO works actively to build the capacities of media during emergency and disaster situations, and to lead the global debate on what their overall response should be. This includes engaging with partners to ensure vital information reaches the vulnerable populations who need it, and promoting UNESCO’s core values of tolerance, diversity and understanding during times when they can be the most at-risk.
