Building peace in the minds of men and women

Sound and Society

Sound influences and affects us on a daily basis. It can help to shape our individual and collective behaviour, which can in turn contribute to our personal productivity and capacity to live together in peace. UNESCO is therefore committed to addressing sound-related issues in five sectors: the sound environment; health; sound recording, reproduction and conservation technology; the relation between image and sound; and musical and sound expression.

At the 39th session of UNESCO’s General Conference in 2017, the Organization passed a resolution, which acknowledged the importance of sound. It also recognized the work of the association "The Week of Sound" and gives patronage to their dedicated celebrations taking place in January each year.

The Organization is working to raise awareness for the importance of sound in today's world and to promote best practices relating to sound in all areas of life from early childhood.
