Communication and Information - Myanmar
The Communication and Information sector of the Project Office works to advance freedom of expression and supports the development of independent and professional media in Myanmar in different ways. As the United Nations agency with a specific mandate to promote “the free flow of ideas by word and image”, UNESCO works in Myanmar to foster free, independent and pluralistic media in print, broadcast and online
It supports media reforms in the country by providing technical assistance in the development of media-related legislation and facilitates consultations and national dialogues between media stakeholders, Members of the Parliament and the government.
Moreover, UNESCO Myanmar strengthens the capacities of reports and media practitioners in Myanmar by conducting thematic training courses; developing training modules and curriculums, producing journalism manuals in Myanmar language adapted to the local context; and providing institutional support to journalism training institutions.
These formations play an important role in the development of the country, as it contributes to an essential peacebuilding work. Indeed, the training of journalists on conflict-sensitive reporting and the promotion of Media and Information Literacy facilitates the dialogue between ethnic groups and the media and aims at building more trust between the media and democratic institution for greater transparency.
