Thai Literacy through Edutainment

In the highlands of Tak province, Thailand,  there are a large number of ethnic minority groups especially Karen people who are Thai illiterate which accounts for 3 percent of the total population over 15 years old age group. UNESCO in collaboration with Tak Provincial ONIE, Thai MOE aims to enhance basic Thai literacy of at least 3,000 disadvantaged adults and young learners at 125 CLCs across 5 remote districts of Tak through movies and songs. 26 NFE teachers were trained and provided with multimedia equipment set (laptop, projector, DVD player, speakers and microphone) to conduct classes with karaoke songs and movies when they visited the villages by motorbike. At present, 4,613 including women and girls have improved Thai speaking and listening skills by singing and watching Thai films. Through this initiative, the learners have gained more confidence when communicate in Thai for basic services, been able to understand the news and access to more knowledge.  It was covered by a major Thai media
