Experiencing Mathematics

This Mathematics Exhibition is a dynamic, hands-on educational tool based on active learning methodology. Each of the experiments were designed to be used by teachers in their classrooms.

Since 2005, the Mathematics exhibition has already been presented successfully in more than 90 cities of 32 different countries in Southern and West Africa, China and East Asia, Latin America, Russia and Western Europe. It has attracted approximately 1,200,000 visitors, of whom about 70% were under 18 and over 20,000 teachers.

Most of the exhibition and experiments are accessible virtually in French, English, Spanish, Portuguese and Arabic.

Main objectives

The main objectives of the exhibition are:

  • To raise the awareness and interest of the public, and especially that of young people, in mathematical concepts and application.
  • To demonstrate that mathematics is within everyone’s reach; that, contrary to what is generally assumed, a sound grasp of basic mathematical properties can be achieved by the majority, and that important mathematical ideas can be made widely accessible.
  • To show that current curricula can be improved by the insertion of hands-on mathematical experiments, hence developing scientific thinking as well as mathematical tools to solve daily life problems of concern.
  • To demonstrate that mathematics is not only indispensable but that it can be interesting, challenging, fun as well as fun.
  • To attract youth into mathematics-related careers.

Partners

A joint effort between UNESCO’s International Basic Sciences Programme (IBSP) and the French organization Centre Sciences, this hands-on Mathematics exhibition has gained the support of several mathematical organizations following the World Mathematical Year 2000, including the International Mathematics Union (IMU) and its commission for education (ICMI).
