World Science Day 2013
On 11 November 2013, around 30 children (aged 7 to 14) were invited to UNESCO headquarters to celebrate World Science Day. In her message on World Science Day, Ms Irina Bokova, the Director-General of UNESCO said:
Today, in a world changing quickly, on a planet under pressure, we need more science, we need more scientists. Science is a force that brings people together, to join hands in the pursuit of knowledge. Science is our best ally to tackle the consequences of climate change, to foster the innovation all societies need today.
For this occasion, the UNESCO Engineering Initiative, with the support of Robogals, organized a hands-on robotic engineering and technology workshop for these children. For the older participants, this event gave them the opportunity to learn the basics of computer programming. For the younger participants, they had fun making a robot dance using its sound sensor.
