Photos of the 27th Session of the IOC Assembly
The Assembly of UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC-UNESCO), composed of 145 Member States, establishes IOC-UNESCO's general policy and main lines of work. The IOC Assembly meets once per biennium, while an Executive Council meets every year.
The Assembly met for its 27th session in Paris on 26 June - 5 July 2013. It was preceded by the 46th session of the IOC Executive Council on 25 June.

Many civil society partners were invited to attend the Assembly to present their joint efforts for the Ocean to Delegates. On 27 June, several partnerships were presented to the Assembly, including our collaboration with the Barcelona Foundation for Ocean Sailing (FNOB) and the documentary Plastic Oceans (in production). A partnership agreement was signed with Tara Expeditions on the same day.

Anton Brunn Memorial Lecture

Special events included the Anton Brunn memorial lecture, by Benjamin S. Halpern, Director of the Center for Marine Assessment and Planning, on "The Ocean Health Index: global and regional applications and future directions".
The Permanent Delegation of Germany to UNESCO kindly organized a cocktail reception after the lecture.
Tribute to Ariel W. González

H. E. Mr Miguel Angel Estrella, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Permanent Delegate of the Permanent Delegation of Argentina to UNESCO, paid tribute to Ariel W. González on the occasion of the posthumous release his book, “(Re)-encountering the Sea: Argentina and scientific knowledge of the oceans. Towards an effective jurisdiction of our maritime spaces”.
Ariel W. González made an outstanding contribution to IOC-UNESCO, in particular its scientific programmes in relation to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and by his profound commitment to the development of the IOC.
Agreement with Océanopolis Brest

An agreement was signed on 2 July 2013 to strengthen and formalize collaboration between UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC/UNESCO) and Océanopolis, Centre for the Scientific and Technical Culture of the Sea, in Brest (France).
N.K. Panikkar Memorial Lecture

The N.K. Panikkar Memorial Lecture was delivered by Dr Shubha Sathyendranath, of the Partnership for Observation of the Global Oceans, on “Human Capacity Development in Ocean Sciences: a personal perspective”.
Agreement with the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS)

The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) and IOC-UNESCO signed an agreement to set up the International Training Centre for Operational Oceanography (ITCOocean) at Hyderabad as a contribution to IOC’s training and capacity development activities mainly for the Indian Ocean Rim (IOR) countries.
