UNESCO Collaborates with Huawei on Artificial Intelligence Training in Nairobi, Kenya

Artificial Intelligence Training in NAIROBI, KENYA@HUAWEI-KENYA

Huawei technologies (Kenya) Company limited introduces Artificial Intelligence Certification in Kenya ICT Academy ecosystem in line with UNESCO Sustainable Development goal 4 focused on Education Development.

As a global leader in Science, Technology and Innovation, UNESCO recognizes the critical roles that emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) could play in reorienting key sectors (education, health, agriculture, finance) of the economies of African countries for sustainable development.  As a convergence of a widening spectrum of frontier technologies, AI has garnered the potential to bring new possibilities for global development and societal change. However, education systems will need to adapt quickly, and new frameworks need to be created for workers and citizens to develop the skills they need to thrive. In response to this, Huawei Technologies (Kenya) Company Limited, a global technological firm reached out to UNESCO to collaborate in offering cutting edge ICT training in areas of AI and cloud computing in Nairobi, Kenya. The training programme targets university lecturers and academics who are Certified AI Academy Instructors with the aim of building their capacities in AI. Participation in the training program is subject to nomination by a university and passing an entry examination.

The training running from 26th August to 4th September 2019 covers the following HCIA-Artificial Intelligence Course Curriculum:

  • Overview of AI
  • Python Programming language
  • Mathematics basics (linear algebra, probability theory and information theory
  •  Tensorflow
  •  Propaedeutics of deep learning
  • Huawei Cloud EI

Upon completion, participants will be offered a Huawei Certified ICT Associate qualification subject to passing three Huawei Academy Instructor Certification (HCAI) examinations. In an interview with some participants they expressed their satisfaction in understanding AI especially deep learning for course work at the university and having some improved skills in the use of AI for data interpolation and interpretation in education, health, agriculture, finance. They also expressed the training will enhance their ability to integrate AI into current curricular at the university and foster PhD research training in AI.
