Natural Sciences

The Natural Sciences Programme of the UNESCO Havana Office designs and implements its activities in Cuba, Dominican Republic and Haiti using as a guide the Medium-Term Strategy (2008-2013) approved by the 34th General Conference of UNESCO - which states in its Overarching Objective 2 "to mobilize scientific knowledge and science policies for sustainable development". This also takes into account the specific characteristics of these countries, particularly their status as island developing states and their geographical location in the western Caribbean, an area exposed to extreme natural phenomena such as hurricanes and earthquakes.

Communication and Information

The Communication and Information programme accompanies the national efforts of Cuba and the Dominican Republic to strengthen universal access to information and knowledge and media development, within the framework of the fulfilment of Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development.

The programme's technical assistance contributes to the development of norms related to access to information in line with international standards, the promotion and safeguarding of documentary heritage, the training of journalists and the media and information literacy of teachers, among other priorities.
