Director-General condemns killing of reporter Rohat Aktaş in Turkey

The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, has denounced the killing of Turkish journalist Rohat Aktaş in the southeastern city of Cirze.

“I condemn the killing of Rohat Aktaş,” the Director-General said. “It is essential for freedom of expression and freedom of information that journalists be able to carry out their work without fear of death or violence.”

Aktaş was found dead on 24 February, almost one month after he had gone missing in the town of Cizre, where he was on assignment for the daily newspaper Azadiya Welat.

The Director-General of UNESCO issues statements on the killing of media workers in line with Resolution 29 adopted by UNESCO Member States at the Organization’s General Conference of 1997, entitled “Condemnation of Violence against Journalists.” These statements are posted on a dedicated webpage, UNESCO condemns the killing of journalists.
