3rd plenary session of the International Co-ordination Committee for the Safeguarding of the Cultural Heritage of Iraq (ICC)

13-14 November 2007

Following the 167th session of the Executive Board, the Director-General of UNESCO was authorized to create an International Co-ordination Committee for the Safeguarding of the Cultural Heritage of Iraq. Its first session was held on 24- 25 May, 2004 and the second on 22 - 23 June, 2005.

In addition to Iraqi experts, the Committee is comprised of 20 international experts from the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Egypt, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Latvia, Norway, Poland, Russian Federation, Sweden, Switzerland, Syrian Arab Republic, Turkey, United Kingdom, and the United States of America. It also includes a number of observers representing governmental and non-governmental organizations such as the International Council of Museums (ICOM), the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM), the International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), the International Council on Archives (ICA), the World Monuments Fund (WMF), and the Getty Conservation Institute.  This Committee is placed under the high patronage of the Iraqi Ministry of Culture and UNESCO. Its mission is twofold. First, to evaluate the international assistance offered for the preservation of Iraq's cultural heritage. Second, to co-ordinate the efforts and activities undertaken to this end.

The four themes on the agenda are: historical monuments and archaeological sites; museums and cultural institutions; intangible cultural heritage; libraries and archives.
