UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay has denounced the murder of broadcast journalist Jacinto Romero Flores in the municipality of Ixtaczoquitlán in the state of Veracruz, Mexico, on 19 August.
I condemn the murder of Jacinto Romero Flores. The fact that journalists continue to be attacked and killed because of the work they do is a cause of grave concern for the wellbeing of society as a whole. Governments must endeavor to end this scourge which also undermines people’s right to access information.
Romero Flores, who worked for radio station Ori Stereo FM, was shot dead while driving his car. The journalist, who is reported to have received threats in connection with his work, is the sixth media worker known to have been killed in Mexico this year.
UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
