Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, today denounced the killing of journalist Nevith Condes Jaramillo in the town of Tejulpilco, Mexico, on 24 August.
“I condemn the murder of Nevith Condes Jaramillo,” said the Director-General. “This crime underscores the need for timely and effective protection measures for all threatened journalists. Violence against media workers presents a major threat to a free and open society. We must defend the right of journalists to carry out their work, which is essential to democracy.”
Jaramillo, the founding director of the local news site El Observatorio del Sur, was stabbed to death in his home in Tejulpilco. Colleagues quoted in the media have alleged that the journalist last year received two threats to his life following the publication of articles on corruption in local government.
UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
