Paris, 06 January —Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has denounced the killing of television reporter Isravel Moses in the state of Tamil Nadu, India, on 8 November.
I condemn the killing of Isravel Moses. We must support journalists’ efforts to report the truth as they see it by ending the impunity that has been enjoyed by their killers for all too long. I therefore call on the Indian authorities to hold those responsible for Isravel’s gruesome murder to account.
Moses, who reported local issues linked to crime and corruption for Tamizhan TV, was hacked to death in a suburb of the city of Kundrathur. He is reported to have previously informed the police of threats again him.
UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
