The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay has condemned the killing of television reporter Shahid Zehri, in Pakistan’s Balochistan Province on 10 October.
I condemn the attack that claimed the life of journalist Shahid Zehri and injured his travel companion,” said the Director-General. “I trust the authorities will spare no effort in prosecuting those responsible for this crime that undermines reporters’ ability to carry out their work.
Zehri, a reporter for Metro 1 News television who regularly reported on unrest in the province, died following the explosion of a car bomb attached to his vehicle. A friend who was travelling with him to Karachi survived the blast.
UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
