Director-General urges investigation into killing of journalist Sohail Khan in Pakistan

23/10/2018

The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, has called on the authorities of Pakistan to ensure that those responsible for the killing of journalist Sohail Khan be brought to justice.

“I condemn the killing of Sohail Khan,” said the Director-General. “I trust the authorities will spare no effort in investigating this crime, which undermines the fundamental human right of freedom of expression as well as the right to access information. Ms Azoulay added that “a free press plays an essential role in combating organized crime and upholding the rule of law.”

Sohail Khan, a reporter for K2 Daily Times daily, which also operates a local television channel, was gunned down on 16 October in Haripur in northwestern Pakistan.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
