Director-General condemns murder of Philippines journalist Nerlita Ledesma

The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, denounced the killing of Philippines journalist Nerlita Ledesma, who was killed on 8 January in Balanga, in the province of Bataan. She called for a thorough investigation into the crime.

“I condemn the murder of Nerlita Ledesma,” said the Director-General. “I am counting on the authorities to shed light on this crime. Every effort must be made to bring those responsible for the killing of Nerlita Ledesma to trial.”

Nerlita Ledesma, 48, worked for the Philippines newspaper Abante. According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, she was shot near her home on the morning of 8 January by two gunmen riding a motorcycle, who then fled the scene.

The Director-General of UNESCO issues statements on the killing of media workers in line with Resolution 29 adopted by UNESCO Member States at the Organization’s General Conference of 1997, entitled “Condemnation of Violence against Journalists.” These statements are posted on a dedicated webpage, UNESCO condemns the killing of journalists.
