The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, today condemned the killing of journalist Edmund Sestoso who died in the southern Philippines’ Dumaguete City on 2 May.
“I condemn the murder of Edmund Sestoso,” said the Director-General. “I call on the authorities to do their utmost to identify and prosecute those responsible for this crime, which undermines the basic human right of freedom of expression and its public manifestation, freedom of the press.”
Sestoso, a journalist for local radio DyGB 91.7, died in hospital of injuries sustained in a shooting attack on 30 April in Dumaguete City.
UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity-building and a range of actions, notably the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
