Director-General condemns killing of journalist Barthélemy Kubanabandu Changamuka in DRC

19/07/2021

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay has called for an investigation into the killing of community radio journalist Barthélemy Kubanabandu Changamuka in North Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo, on 09 May.

I condemn the killing of Barthélemy Kubanabandu Changamuka. I urge the authorities to spare no effort in investigating this crime, which, like all attacks on the media, undermines freedom of expression, press freedom and people’s right to information.

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO

Kitshanga Community Radio (CORAKI FM) broadcaster Barthélemy Kubanabandu Changamuka was shot in his home minutes after going off air.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
