Director-General calls for justice following killing of journalist Arturo Alba Medina in Mexico

06/11/2020

The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, has condemned the killing of television broadcaster Arturo Alba Medina in Ciudad Juárez, in the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua.

I condemn the killing of Arturo Alba Medina. I trust that the Mexican authorities will investigate this crime and bring its perpetrators to trial. Societies everywhere need free, pluralistic media and it is the responsibility of governments to ensure rule of law and convince criminals that they will have to face due process for their mischief.

Audrey Azoulay, UNESCO Director-General

Arturo Alba Medina, host of Telediario, a daily local news programme on the commercial channel Multimedios Televisión, was shot dead a few minutes after the end of his show on 29 October.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
