Director-General condemns killing of journalist Anwar Jan in Pakistan

14/12/2020

Paris, 03 August —UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay has condemned the murder of print journalist Anwar Jan, on 23 July in Barkhan, in Pakistan’s Balochistan province.

“I condemn the murder of Anwar Jan,” said the Director-General. “I call on the authorities to investigate this crime and hold its perpetrators to account. A clear message must be sent whereby gunpoint censorship cannot go unpunished.”

Anwar Jan, a journalist for the Naveed-e-Pakistan, was heading home when he was killed by two gunmen.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
