Director-General condemns murder of photographer Albertina Martínez Burgos in Chile

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay has called on the authorities to investigate the murder of freelance photojournalist and television lighting assistant Albertina Martínez Burgos who was found dead on 21 November in Santiago de Chile.

“I condemn the murder of Albertina Martínez Burgos,” said the Director-General. “I call on the authorities to investigate this crime and bring those responsible for it to justice. Protecting freedom of expression and the free flow of ideas by word and image is essential to the protection of democracy and the rule of law.”

The body of Albertina Martínez Burgos was found in her apartment on the night of 21 November. Albertina Martínez Burgos had also worked as a lighting assistant for television channel Mega.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action  on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
