Director-General urges investigation into murder of journalist Javier Córdoba Chaguendo in Colombia

06/11/2019

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has condemned the murder of radio host Javier Córdoba Chaguendo in Llorente, in the southwest Colombia, on 18 October.

“I condemn the murder of Javier Córdoba Chaguendo,” said the Director-General. “I call on authorities to reinforce measures to protect journalists and media personnel and urge them to ensure that this crime is brought to justice.”

Córdoba, a local radio host for community Radio Planeta FM, was shot in the studio while presenting a music programme.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
