18/06/2019

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay has denounced the murder of print journalist Norma Sarabia in the town of Huimanguillo, in Mexico’s state of Tabasco, on 11 June.

“I condemn the killing of Norma Sarabia,” said the Director-General. “I trust that authorities will bring the perpetrators of this attack to justice to preserve press freedom, which depends on journalists’ ability to carry out their work without fearing for their lives.”

Norma Sarabia who mainly reported on crime and violence for newspapers Tabasco HOY and Diario Presente was killed by two unidentified gunmen outside her home.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
