“I condemn the murder of Telésforo Santiago Enríque,” declared the Director-General. “Journalists should never be targeted for carrying out their duty to inform the public. The contribution of community media, such as the one Telésforo Santiago Enríquez worked for, is particularly important for freedom of expression and access to information. I trust that those responsible for this murder will be brought to justice shortly,” added Ms Azoulay.
Telésforo Santiago Enríquez, founder of the indigenous community radio Estéreo Cafetal La Voz Zapoteca, was shot by unidentified assailants on his way to the premises of the radio. He was an activist for indigenous peoples’ rights and an indigenous language teacher, who had denounced cases of corruption and received threats over the telephone during his live radio broadcast.
UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
