Director-General condemns murder of social media activist Muhammad Bilal Khan in Pakistan

26/06/2019

Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, has called on the authorities of Pakistan to bring the killers of blogger and social media activist Muhammad Bilal Khan to trial.

“I condemn the killing of Muhammad Bilal Khan,” said the Director-General. “I call on the authorities investigating this crime to bring its perpetrators to trial. Freedom of expression is a fundamental human right that must be preserved for everybody, regardless of individuals’ religious or political opinion.”

On June 16, unidentified attackers killed the popular 22-year old religious blogger and social media activist Bilal Khan.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably in the framework of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
