Director-General calls on Russian authorities to investigate violent death of journalist Denis Suvorov

02/08/2018

Audrey Azoulay, the Director-General of UNESCO, has called on the Russian authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Russian television journalist Denis Suvorov.

“I am deeply concerned about the death Denis Suvorov,” said the Director-General “I trust that the authorities will investigate this case, establish whether it was related to his professional activities, and bring its culprits to justice.”

The dead body of Suvorov, an online editor and popular host on the state-owned television Rossia Nizhny Novgorod, was found in a construction site in Nizhny Novgorod on 23 July.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity-building and a range of actions, notably the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
