Director-General Condemns Killing of Community Radio Journalist Ahmad Abu Hussein in Gaza

30/04/2018

The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, today called for an investigation into the killing of Palestinian community radio journalist Ahmed Abu Hussein, who died in Gaza on 25 April.

“I condemn the killing of Ahmed Abu Hussein,” said the Director-General. “I trust that the authorities will investigate this crime. Journalists must not fear for their lives as they carry out their work, which is essential to democracy and rule of law."

Ahmed Abu Hussein, a journalist for the Gaza-based community radio, Sawt Al Shaab, sustained bullet wounds in northern Gaza on 13 April that proved fatal.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity-building and a range of actions, notably the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
