UNESCO in Brazil celebrates World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development

03/03/2022

In November 2019, UNESCO's General Conference proclaimed the 4 March World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development to raise awareness of the role of engineering in modern life, which is essential to mitigate the impact of climate change and advance sustainable development.

To celebrate this International Day, UNESCO in Brazil publishes the summary in Portuguese of the UNESCO Report Engineering for sustainable development, initially launched in English in 2021.

This report shows how equal opportunities for all are vital to ensuring an inclusive and gender-balanced profession that can better respond to the shortage of engineers for implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

It also provides a snapshot of the engineering innovations shaping our world, especially emerging technologies such as big data and artificial intelligence (AI), which are crucial for addressing the pressing challenges facing humankind and the planet.

This report analyses the transformation of engineering education and capacity-building to enable engineers to tackle the challenges ahead. It highlights the global effort needed to address the specific regional disparities while summarizing the engineering trends across the different regions of the world.
