International Day of Education

UNESCO would like to invite everyone to celebrate the International Day of Education during an online event co-organized by UNESCO, UN Headquarters, and the Global Partnership for Education on 25 January 2021 from 2 pm to 5 pm CET.

Under the theme “Recover and Revitalize Education for the COVID-19 Generation,” the Day will stress the necessity to protect and mobilize funding for education; give voice to 'community heroes' who acted to leave no learner behind during school closures, and present innovations that pave the way towards more resilient and inclusive education systems.

The meeting will be opened by UNESCO’s Director-General and include messages from the UN Secretary-General and the President of the 75th UN General Assembly. The event will also feature the laureates of a storytelling contest around “The Little Prince,” an initiative organized with the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies.

About the International Day of Education

Education is a human right, a public good and a public responsibility.

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 24 January as International Day of Education, in celebration of the role of education for peace and development.

Without inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong opportunities for all, countries will not succeed in achieving gender equality and breaking the cycle of poverty that is leaving millions of children, youth and adults behind.
