Information presented to the Bureau of the World Heritage Committee in 1998

In March 1998, a mission was undertaken by a UNESCO staff member. The results of the mission will be presented to the Bureau during its session.

Action Required

The Bureau, based on additional information that will be available at the time of the twenty-second session of the Bureau, may recommend appropriate actions to the consideration of the State Party and the Committee.

Conservation issues presented to the World Heritage Committee in 1998

The Bureau, at its twenty-second session requested the Spanish authorities to submit by 15 September 1998 a report on the plans for the hill and fortress of Burgos, which it considered as one of the main elements of the cultural landscape of Burgos. This request was transmitted to the Permanent Delegation of Spain on 16 July 1998.

The Observer of Spain informed the Bureau that a Spanish expert might be present at the Committee session.

The Bureau, therefore, decided to refer the examination of the state of conservation of Burgos Cathedral to the Committee.

Decisions adopted by the Committee in 1998
22 BUR V.B.59
Burgos Cathedral (Spain)

The Bureau took note of the report presented by the Principal Director of the Culture Sector on the plans to enhance the site of the Fortress of Burgos. The Bureau expressed its satisfaction to the local authorities for the decision to re-study the project for the site of the Fortress, taking into account the authenticity of the cultural landscape and the adequate interpretation and presentation of the historical remains.

It recommended the authorities to undertake a complete and integral study (including aspects of landscaping, urbanism, architecture and archaeology) of the hill on which the Fortress is located, as it is one of the main elements of the cultural landscape of Burgos.

The Bureau requested the Spanish authorities to present a report on the plans for the hill and the Fortress by 15 September 1998 for examination by the Bureau at its twenty-second extraordinary session.
