The promotion of local content on the Internet

UNESCO supports the efforts and progress made within the framework of enhanced cooperation in shaping Internet policy around the principle of inclusiveness, diversity and openness, and in enhancing the mutual understanding and relations among all stakeholders, fostering their participation in the policy dialogue process. The Internet holds the enormous potential for development, and UNESCO particularly emphasise the Internet’s crucial role in enhancing the free flow of information and ideas throughout the world, which contribute to progress towards inclusive Knowledge Societies.

The creation of local content and its distribution through the local as well as global Internet infrastructure is an important aspect of Knowledge Societies. This means having the capability not just to acquire information, but also to transform it into knowledge and understanding, including local content, which empowers individuals to enhance their livelihoods and to contribute to the social and economic development of their society.

UNESCO, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and The Internet Society (ISOC) prepared a study on the economic aspects of local content creation and local Internet infrastructure. The study analyses whether the promotion of local content creation and the development of local Internet infrastructure has an impact on the access price of the Internet for local users. It also considers the enabling environment for sustainable, broad-based, and robust local content industries.
