Director-General calls on Mexico to bring the killers of Journalist José Guadalupe Chan Dzib to justice

03/07/2018

The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, today condemned the killing of reporter José Guadalupe Chan Dzib in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo on 29 June.

“I condemn the killing of José Guadalupe Chan Dzib,” said the Director-General. “Citizens need a free and diverse press to make informed choices. I therefore call on the authorities to spare no effort in bringing the perpetrators of this crime to justice, in the interest of press freedom and pluralism.”

The killing of José Guadalupe Chan Dzib, who covered politics and crime for the Playa News Aquí y Ahora digital weekly, occurred in the village of Saban.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity-building and a range of actions, notably the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
