The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, has condemned the deadly attack in Ghazni City, Afghanistan, that claimed the life of media worker Mohammad Dawood on 10 August.
“I condemn the attack on the media in Ghazni City, which led to the death of Mohammad Dawood,” the Director-General declared. “This attack reflects the great risks faced by journalists and associated media personnel in Afghanistan, affecting the whole of society’s right to access information.”
Mohammad Dawood, a media technician for public broadcaster Radio Television Afghanistan (RTA), was killed during an attack against Tape-e-Television, an area in Ghazni City where the antennae of many local media are located. The attack also destroyed many of the city’s telecom connections and cut the signal of some broadcast media.
UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
