Director-General Condemns Murder of journalist Karla Turcios in El Salvador

18/04/2018

The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay, today welcomed the investigation underway into the killing of Karla Turcios, journalist for the El Economista magazine, in the outskirts of Santa Rosa Guachopilín (El Salvador) on 14 April.

“I condemn the killing of Karla Turcios,” the Director-General said. “Violence cannot be met with impunity as it threatens freedom of expression and people’s right to information. For this reason, I welcome the launch of an investigation into this case and hope those responsible will be brought to trial.”

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity-building and a range of actions, notably the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
