UNESCO and UN Elections Support Team offer Libyan media professionals and NGOs training on election reporting

UNESCO and the United Nations Electoral Support Team, with the support of Libya’s High National Elections Commission, will organize workshops to provide quality basic training to media professionals from across Libya on how to cover the electoral process in a professional manner. The programme aims to improve the free flow of information to the Libyan public and facilitate broad public debate ahead of national and local elections scheduled to be held in Libya over the coming months.

Four-day workshops targeting some 80 journalists from all over Libya will be held from 1 to 14 December at the Tendi Center in downtown Tripoli. A one-day seminar for some 50 civil society organization personnel on how to work with the media during elections will also take place. Both are part of a broader on-going capacity-building programme of support to the Libyan government and media.

The workshops and seminar are funded by the Finnish Development Cooperation and Government of Japan. They have been designed for journalists and editors working in both state and private media organizations in radio, television, print press, online media and photojournalism, as well as those involved with university progammes preparing students for future employment in the media.

The need for such training is particularly strong in Libya as decades of authoritarian control and censorship have prevented media practitioners and civil society organizations from developing the professional standards needed when covering elections. Since the 17th of February Revolution, capacity development has become a priority to support the media and improve the quality of content.

A team of three experts with broad experience in training media workers in election reporting in the Middle East and around the world will facilitate the workshops. Topics to be addressed in the training include conflict-sensitive electoral coverage, gender and minority issues in election reporting, electoral issues, broadcast media reporting during elections and more.

UNESCO’s Representative in Libya as well as representatives from the High National Electoral Commission and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Libya will open the sessions.
