Director-General condemns the murder of radio journalist Javid Noori in Afghanistan

The Director-General of UNESCO, Audrey Azoulay has denounced the killing of Javid Noori in western Afghanistan.

 “I condemn the murder of Javid Noori,” said the Director-General. “I urge the authorities to investigate this crime and bring its perpetrators to justice. Violent extremists must not be emboldened through impunity. There can be no justification for murder.”

 Javid Noori, a government employee and part time broadcaster on Radio Neshat was killed at a roadblock in the province of Farah on 5 January.

 UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and a range of actions, notably the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
