Global MIL Week 2017

The sixth annual global celebration of Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week will take place from 25 October to 1 November, 2017. The Global MIL Week 2017 highlights include the Seventh Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue (MILID) Conference, taking place October 24-27, 2017 in Kingston, Jamaica.

The annual Global MIL Week activities and conference are important opportunities for stakeholders globally to celebrate the progress achieved towards the process of "MIL for all", to meet and share the latest research, projects, new ideas and information with a diverse gathering of stakeholders involved in MIL, and in print, screen-based and digital media.

UNESCO and GAPMIL are calling partners all over the world to promote the MIL Week.

The Global MIL Week 2017 will be organised under the theme “Media and Information Literacy in Critical Times: Re-imagining Ways of Learning and Information Environments”. The feature conference will, for the first time in Jamaica, connect international organizations, universities, associations, research groups and educators, media professionals, information specialists and librarians, policy makers and regulators, NGOs and practitioners in MIL from around the world, to heighten public awareness of the importance of media and information literacy at a global level. This year the conference will also highlight artists, journalists, libraries and other professionals who work on after-school and community-based MIL programs.

GAPMIL Award

The GAPMIL AWARD will recognize an educator* integrating MIL (media and information literacy) in an innovative way in their classroom and curriculum. The GAPMIL Award is led by the Global Alliance for Partnership on Media and Information Literacy (GAPMIL) and Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue University Network (MILID) with the support of UNESCO-UNAOC.

* Future years will and broaden invited candidates to include NGOs, associations, and other groups include additional themes.

Award Descriptions and Criteria

This award is intended to honor an educator in any subject area from kindergarten through university, as long as their curriculum reflects integration of media and information literacy concepts with a focus on intercultural dialogue.

  • Nominations should describe how the nominee’s teaching and curriculum impacts students in MIL.
  • Nominations should describe how the nominee’s teaching practice does influence or could influence the Media and Information Literacy field at large.
  • Nominations should provide links to two current curriculum examples and a syllabus (if appropriate) produced by the nominee.
